As the 2009 Tour De France comes to an end, I wanted to say thank you for the overwhelming support I’ve received. While I didn’t win the Tour this year, my return to professional cycling was never about the bike – it was always about improving the lives of the 28 million people around the globe who are living with cancer today.
While I was racing in the tour our movement did just that: We needed to add 30,000 names to the World Cancer Declaration in order to secure a matching donation to fight cancer – and we blew that target away, reaching 85,000 signatures in just a few days!
It’s a big victory, but our ride has only just begun. Starting today, we need to renew our commitment to a world without cancer by building an even stronger movement.

By sharing the stories of those who are fighting or have fought this disease and those they have touched, we’ll make a strong case for greater attention and resources focused on the global fight against cancer.
For me, making a dedication was easy – it was for my mom. When I was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer, my mom was there to listen to me, cheer me on and remind me I wasn’t alone. No one was more invested in my survival. She was my biggest ally and my greatest advocate.
